During the entire month of April, I’m participating in the A to Z Blogging Challenge. The alphabet will be my motivation, though the content of the posts will be very similar to what regular readers are used to. Check out the link for more amazing bloggers, and enjoy April!
(I’m sorry this post is two days late. I had a big story worked up about how I scheduled it and it didn’t post, or I accidentally posted it to my test blog, or anything that would make me be less of a slacker. Truth is, I just didn’t post on Saturday. #ashamed)
From Dictionary.com:
geek noun Slang
- a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
- a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
- a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.
Origin:
1915- 20; probably variant of geck (mainly Scots ) fool
These days the term ‘geek’ has become synonymous with fandom. I had to go look it up to see if that definition has worked its way into the dictionary yet. It looks like the dictionary still defines it in a similar manner to the word ‘nerd’ but I think a lot of us use the two different these days. Let me know if that’s not true, though.
So, I’m a geek. Either based on the dictonary’s definition or by the more popular term. I don’t wear my fandom the way a lot of people do, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. I’m a huge anime geek. A bigger computer geek. I’m not the gaming geek I pretend to be. But I’m also a music geek. A geek connoisseur of obscure male-written literary novels. And a coffee geek.
I like my geekdom. I feel like everyone needs something to be passionate about, and while my choices may be bizarre, they teach me something new every day and I enjoy them.
So, what are you geeky about?
I’m a film geek. People only need to start saying ‘that one with (insert actor here) in it, you know, where he (insert plot point here)’ and I’ll know what they’re talking about. It means I always win at Brian Denehey…
oooo geek, yay!
Though I will be honest, I use geek and nerd as almost the same thing. Others view them different but I see them as close. I’m not the gamer type, i’m not the fandom type, i’m the sometimes carries books on particle physics in her purse type. lol
I’ve always been a proud geek (Robin Hood and the middle ages, both literary, historical, and film – weird, I know – and pen-and-paper RPGs), because geeks are fun to be around even when you don’t share their niche. You can almost always get interested in something if someone who loves it is talking.
On the other hand, nothing is more boring than someone who is only mildly interested in everything.
That’s a good question! Books I guess and also romantic comedies. Silly, but true.
